چکیده

Abstract. This paper proposes a new method that combines checkpointing methods with error-controlled lossy compression for large-scale high-performance full-waveform inversion (FWI), an inverse problem commonly used in geophysical exploration. combination can significantly reduce data movement, allowing reduction run time as well peak memory. In the exascale computing era, frequent transfer (e.g., memory bandwidth, PCIe bandwidth GPUs, or network) is performance bottleneck rather than FLOPS of processing unit. Like many other adjoint-based optimization problems, FWI costly terms number floating-point operations, large footprint during backpropagation, and overheads. Past work adjoint has developed requirements backpropagation at cost additional computations. Combining this traditional compression, we explore three-way tradeoff between memory, precision, to solution. We investigate how approximation errors introduced by forward solution impact objective function gradient final inverted Empirical results from these numerical experiments indicate high lossy-compression rates (compression factors ranging up 100) have relatively minor on convergence quality

Discretized Adjoint State Time and Frequency Domain Full Waveform Inversion: A Comparative Study

This study derives the discretized adjoint states full waveform inversion (FWI) in both time and frequency domains based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To achieve this, we applied adjoint state inversion on the discretized wave equation in both time domain and frequency domain. Besides, in this article, we introduce reliability tests to show that the inversion is performing as it should be ...

Full waveform inversion with image-guided gradient

The objective of seismic full waveform inversion (FWI) is to estimate a model of the subsurface that minimizes the difference between recorded seismic data and synthetic data simulated for that model. Although FWI can yield accurate and high-resolution models, multiple problems have prevented widespread application of this technique in practice. First, FWI is computationally intensive, in part ...

Full Waveform Inversion with Total Variation Regularization

Waveform inverse problems are mathematically ill-posed and, therefore, regularization methods are required to obtain stable and unique solutions. The Total Variation (TV) regularization method is used to resolve sharp interfaces obtaining solutions where edges and discontinuities are preserved. TV regularization accomplishes these goals by imposing sparsity on the gradient of the model paramete...
